Agung’s born in 1971 in Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia. Agung Gunawan is a renowned and established dancer, an artistic director, a choreographer and a vocalist.
Since he decided to live as an independent artists in 2005, he has been questioning and investigating the ever-changing boundaries and universal hallmarks of traditional, classical and contemporary Javanese arts and culture. He is also seeking new forms of artistic expression engendered from ancient, indigenous Javanese wisdom and knowledge commonly used in the daily life in the village.
He was professionally trained and mentored for years by the legendary guru Bagong Kusudiharjo, R.M. Ywandjono, R. Aj Sri Kadarjati and M. Miroto in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Currently, he moved back in the village Manisrenggo in Klaten City, Central Java, as a director of Agung Dancing Center and a dancer also choreographer while continuosly touring numerous countries for performances and projects.

It is a new art home for Agung Gunawan as a founder’s, ADC in history is the real home where Agung was born. From a small village located between the Prambanan temples and south of Mount Merapi, he began to learn about dance and art in 1983. On March 30, 2021, when Agung was 50 years old, he decided to establish Agung Dancing Center ( ADC) as a new expression platform space to interpret and reflected from Agung’s artistic life journey.
