Improvisation, Contact & Creation
Workshop 31
Apartness leads to connection
Chico Katsube
Contact Improvisation (CI) is usually about initiating the movement by the physical contact.
However, this time, we’d like to explore what is left behind/ ahead the contact while depicting CI through the filter of the Japanese spirits and aesthetics, “zanshin残心” and “ma間”.
Zanshin is literally translated as “remaining mind”. It indicates a state of awareness that allows seamless connection with surroundings by staying focused.
Consequently, the seamless connection embodies “ma” translated as intervals that suggests the consciousness of time and space in between.
Thereby, we’d like to develop an understanding of CI from a different perspective.
Welcoming beginners, experienced, and all, this study will help to find unique aspects of Contact Improvisation.
